  Acknowledgments

My Husband – For years, he’s worked himself to death to give our family everything we needed or wanted. He encourages me every day to follow my dreams just like he did the day he told me to take the chance. He’s my best friend, and I wouldn’t know what to do without him. Or the fact he listens to my non-stop rambling or my need to have a notepad with me in case I need to write something down that pops into my head.

My Three Kiddos – Every day, I watch them grow up into little people who want to take over the world. Well, in their own way, that is. They are an inspiration all by themselves. They love to find out what I’m working on and give me ideas. One of my favorite things is to ask them what I should have someone do or how they should act. Some of their ideas are wicked.

My Alphas – You guys rock big time! Thank you all for being the first to read the stories as they come alive. It means the world to me. Especially when you all start to get mad. That’s when I know I’m doing something right. And in doing so, pushing me to keep going with all the different plots that form in my head. I’m thankful to you all for being ready and willing to read and give your input.

My Knox Publishing People – Thank you guys for being such great people to work with.

Liz – My sister from another mister, my best friend, and Publisher/Boss/Co-Writer extraordinaire. You’re my go-to when I need it. I love working with you on all that we do. No matter how much chaos we go through to get it done.

Diane – If not for this woman, I’d swear I would lose my head. She sets me straight when I don’t know which way to look. Thank you for everything you do in being the best PA I could ask for. However, you’re also one amazing friend.

Kim and Jackie – No matter how much insanity is thrown your way, you still put up with me and I’m thankful for it all the same. Thank you both for taking on all of my work. I love the fact I work with you both on each of them. Also, the fact when it comes to something I miss, you help me understand how to correct it, so it doesn’t happen again.

  Protecting Mine

  Tragedy falls

  A reckoning comes

  Standing up to those around

I must protect what is mine

  The sweet bird is innocent

  It needs strength to fly

It also needs an anchor to guide them

Protecting what is mine is what I do

Sheltering them from the depths of pain

  No more shall they feel

She won’t ever feel hurt again

Not if I can keep them safe

Away from the agony that befalls us all

My bird is who I protect

And the children she watches over

Fly for me and I’ll hold you dear

  Protecting what is mine

No matter what comes our way

  Prologue

  Blaze

“Daddy,” my little girl squeals as she waves her hand in my direction. My heart soars at the sight of her rushing in my direction. I kneel in front of her and hold my arms out with a big smile on my face. “I love you,” she says when she collides with my much larger frame.

Grinning at the sight of my little girl, Laura, I feel a sense of pride in her being mine. My princess who could brighten the darkest day.

“Love you too, princess. How was your day?”

“It was the best ‘cause I get to see you,” she says. I frown as she goes from a little girl to my toddler.

  What the hell?

“Daddy, you know you are the best Daddy in the world. I love my little brothers and can’t wait to see my sister when she gets here,” Laura says.

  Sister?

Laura fades, and I do everything in my power to keep a hold of her. “Don’t worry, Daddy, everything will be okay this time. Mommy Raven will protect them all. So will you. Just don’t let the boogeyman get too close to Mommy.”

Jolting up in bed, I’m breathing raggedly. What the hell?

Reaching out for my woman, I find her side of the bed empty.

  Where the hell is Raven?

Glancing around the room, I’m alone but see the light coming from underneath the bathroom door. I throw the covers off of me and go to check on her. Hearing the sounds of puking, I open the door and find her hunched over the toilet with her hair falling around her.

We’d partied last night at the clubhouse, celebrating Viper’s return from being locked up for a while. When I say a while, I mean he’d only just gotten his patch when someone framed him for something he didn’t do and spent years behind bars. Unfortunately, the cops at the time wouldn’t believe us, and they were dirty.

Fury and Ela are at our house babysitting the boys giving us a much-needed break and a night for me to fuck my ol’ lady in ways I can’t do with them in the house. Wild sex that involves Raven screaming my name out as I make her come.

Fuck me. My cock gets hard just thinking about her coming over me.

“You okay, Little Bird?” I ask, making my way to her. I pull the hair out of her face.

Moaning miserably, she retches once again.

Is this from her drinking so much last night? Or could she be pregnant?

No way would she have drunk as much as she did at the party if she were. But I’ve never seen her throw up after drinking.

Hell, the woman didn’t even get sick when she was pregnant with Mark for that matter.

When she finishes, Raven sits back and looks at me. “Thank you, Liam,” she murmurs.

Nodding, I release her hair, get up and pull her with me. I move us to the sink and sit her on the counter, grab a washcloth from underneath. Wetting the cloth, I clean her up.

“You know you don’t have to do that,” she mumbles.

“Sure I do, baby. You drank so much last night. I’m sober. That means it’s my duty to take care of my ol’ lady when she’s puking her guts up,” I chuckle.

“Ugh, I’ve never puked like this before,” she groans.

“Yeah, I know. Let’s get you back in bed. We have a few more hours before we gotta get back to the house to the kids,” I tell her.

“Hmm, sleep sounds good, but I can think of something else I’d like to do more.” My woman is always ready for me.

“Well then, let me get you to the bed and figure out exactly what that something else is,” I state, swooping her up into my arms.

This woman means the world to me and I’d do anything in the world to protect her from anyone harming her: her and the boys. I just wish I knew what my dream meant about a sister and a boogeyman.

Who would this boogeyman be? How do I protect them from something I know nothing of? One way or another, though, I’ll find out.

  Chapter One

  Raven

  One Week Later

Staring at the stick, it confirms what I’ve suspected for the past week after waking up in Blaze’s room at the clubhouse. My fears start to take over.

  This can’t be happening.

  Not again.

Pregnant, it’s a simple word that scares the daylights out of me.

The last time I’d been pregnant, I ended up giving birth to Mark only to be rushed to surgery due to my heart rate dropping, then my baby, not even hours old, was kidnapped from the hospital. I don’t ever want to go through that again. I told myself I didn’t want to have any more kids. I was happy with only the two boys we have.

My mom, Ela, and daddy, Fury, they spent the past two weeks here with us. They left this morning, but not before my momma shared with me her words. Like me, she’s gifted, but unlike me, she knows how to wield her gift better than I do and hers is far more powerful than mine.

“The calm before the storm is okay, but the smells of the fresh, crisp air after it blows through is even better. Carry this one as you’ve done before. You’re stronger than you think and so is the gift you carry inside you. But beware, the past has a way of striking out. You can make it through if you stick close to the ones you trust. The anchor will always stand before you.”

Her words are everything to me. But this one confounds me to an extent. I know who she means when she speaks of the anchor. That’s her talking about Blaze. The storm she speaks of tells me something massive is coming our way. I just wish I knew what it was.

With shaking hands, I lift up the stick that shows the proof of me carrying our third child. Leaving our bathroom, I head downstairs to find Blaze in the kitchen finishing up with cooking breakfast. The smell of bacon causes me to want to vomit.

Taking a deep breath, I enter the kitchen, smiling at my boys. Matthew is sitting in his booster seat at the table eating his pancakes. Mark is in the highchair, playing with his cereal.

Blaze tilts his head in my direction, takes one look at me, and grins. But one look at my face, the grin is gone and he turns to give me his undivided attention.

  “What’s wrong?” he asks quietly.

Tears well up in my eyes. After him losing his daughter years ago, then with everything with the boys, we didn’t want more. What’s he going to think about this news?
